I have gotten different number about what mileage I'm suppose to change the timing belt. 80k, 100k, or 120k.

It is strange how you can read different values. The app I'm making shows:

    Jetta 2.0D TDI CR 2008-11
    Engine code: CBDA, CBDB, CEGA

    Replacement Intervals:
    <MY 2009:
Timing belt - Renew: Every 80,000 miles or 48 months.
Timing belt tensioner - Renew: Every 160,000 miles or 96 months.

    MY 2010>:
Timing belt - Renew: Every 80,000 miles or 48 months.
Timing belt tensioner - Renew: Every 80,000 miles or 48 months.

Which is the same for all CR engines.

The newer spec is 120,000 miles or 5 years.

I'm sure I've read when I was at work that they are 120k. The easiest thing is ask a dealer.

What does it say in your owner's manual maintenance schedule?

    2012's are 120k or 130k... I'll have a look at break time...

My owners manual says 120k for my 2010 JSW. I'm doing it at 100k just for peace of mind. The every 48 month thing sounds ridiculous. The timing belt is very beefy.

well gents, against all conventional wisdom, and common sense, i'm at 110k miles on my 2010 TDI and i'm probably going to put, or at least try to put another 10k miles on the car before i get mine changed. wish me luck. I'd do it now but i'm broke.

Check out the mk6 FAQ for the DIY article. I wouldn't worry about another 10k since the owner's manual says 120k. But do change when possible. Even if money is tight, don't skimp on the parts since cheap parts = possible failure and a much bigger repair bill. I rent the special tools which can save you a few bucks.

Is there a source of info on DYI timing belt replacement?

Yes, the post right above yours says where to find it. Lots more info in the FAQ.

I think the manual says 120k and I'm going to be safe and do it at 100k. I think everyone would agree that's probably the best thing. With all the info on this website about how to do it, I'm not going in blind. I'm at 85k right now.

2012 Golf tdi- I stretched it to 188k miles due to being broke. Tech said everything looked fine, water pump looked like new. The interval they recommend depends on driving style and other factors. At least change it at 150k. Also- time makes the belt more prone to break. A 2000 tdi with only 60k miles could break a belt due to age, belt drying out etc...

It's that time for me and my 2011 Jetta TDI, 114,000miles on the dash board. I've found a local indie that I trust with a good rep for the job. Next up I need to know what kit people have had good luck with. After we talked for a bit I figured we might as well do a coolant flush and thermostat while she was on the hoist. I haven't done it yet and its recommended every 2 years along with the brake fluid. Might be overkill but I need this thing to last forever. :)

The way I see it, is that anything is givin a lifespan.
This time/mileage (provided by the manufacture) is the safest time to replace before failure under normal use. Will/can it last longer, sure.
Will it break sooner? Well it could, on rare occurrences or under harsh conditions.

I personally would not exceed by anything over 10% (playing off manufacturer margin of safety).

This is not a surprise maintenance, this is a scheduled maintenance that you can start saving for, on mile one, not on mile 119,999.
