Hi I know this is very old but just wanted to add something here. If you constantly have to play with adjusting your shifter cables then you are probably parking your on the street and leaving it in first gear. Then the guy behind you or in front of you when he wants to come out of the parking bumps into your car and that creates a lot of problem for shifters since they get stressed. Fix your e-brake, replace your cables and leave your car in neutral and with e-brake pulled. Since I started to do this I never have problem with adjustments. Also avoid washing engine in the area around shifter cables, if water gets in it will case your shifter to get stuck. Lubricate it once in a while with lithium grease spray and stick with vw original gear oil. All other oils that I tried did not improve anything.
