Bought my 1.9 TDI sportline new in 2005 (new spec) and I have been a pretty happy owner for 8 years.

However the past month has been brutal:

    Replaced condenser (aircon) - R3500 (£ 250)
Replaced disks, shocks and stabaliser links - R4500 (£ 320)

and yesterday the engine made a strange noise and smoke came out. I believe it might be the timing belt (since there are "small chunks of rubber" on the top of the engine, but strangely more so on the OTHER side of the engine - not next to the timing belt).

So I will have to take it to the dealer on Friday and hope for the best.. At least I was able to drive it home (and it did seem fine) - STRANGE

The car has done 170 000km (106 000 miles). So I guess that is just the price one has to pay.

    Otherwise it drives like magic.

what was it? pretty sure not the timing belt (the car wouldn't've been drivable)
