Start by removing the plugs on the windshield wiper arms.

Remove the nuts and wiper arms. The arms will take some work to remove.

Next remove the rubber seal and the plastic cowel cover.

Finally, remove the two bolts and the cowl front.

The ECU is snapped into a plastic bracket. Remove it and pull it out as much as the harness allows.

Wrap the entire area with a blanket to keep from dropping metal particles and cut slots across the middle of the breakoff screws. The middle pins are a significantly harder material than the white outer pieces. Make sure to cut across them.

Use a flat head screwdriver to carefully remove the break off screws and then pry open the security cage.

Pull the two tabs out to release the ECU from the harness.

I've done about 3 of these and a 4th one's on the todo list. I've got some of the photos to continue this to a full DPF pull, but I keep getting more and more into the job, and don't want to grab my camera with dirty hands.

Do you reuse the slotted bolts, or get new ones?

You can buy new security bolts from the parts counter for about $2 each, but I just leave the whole security collar off.

When the dealer updates the firmware, do they go through the same process, or is there a port they simply plug into?

nice writeup toeball. I would just add that the ecu location is different on the pre 2010? vw common rails. The Malone Tuning page has a great photo tutorial on ecu removal for both ecu locations. Happy tuning!

Is the Malone Tuning 1.5 or stage 2 upgrade a direct replacement ECU, or do you send yours to them for modification?

Did you build that exhaust or is it ordered? If so where from. And if you made it, how much for the build?

You take yours out and ship it to Malone

Not sure what you mean. It's a PDE downpipe, a Magnaflow muffler, and a Borla cat-back. There's also a piece of 2.5" stainless pipe inline with the muffler on the car.

my mechanic told me that the ECU on my 2013 Jetta needs replacement because it kills the engine depsite all the sensors working etc. Do you guys know if i can just swap it for a used ECU in good condition or do i need to reprogram it. He told me i might need to go to the stealership to reprogram it because he cannot do it without the VW computer

Nice write-up from an old thread.

My ecu is under the carpet on the passenger side on my 2010 Golf the same as your 2010 VW Golf TDI.
