Ok so I thought I'd have a go at changing my transmission oil as it has never been done.
Apparently it should hold 1.8ltr so dutifully purchased two litres and the 17mm hex driver.

Sat vehicle level, opened up drain plug, left to drain whilst had a cuppa, returned to find it had stopped draining, measured out oil to find only had 750ml empty out?

Thought no wonder gear change wasn't particularly smooth!
Proceeded to fill with new oil expecting a lot more to go in than came out, but no most I could get in was the 750ml before it started running out of filling hole?

So what did I do wrong? What happened to rest of the 1.8ltrs and why didn't it drain out?

Will say this, so far gear change has been much smoother.

    Any pointers?

What age of caddy? If it's mk5 based the level hole is in the wrong place. You need to take out the reverse switch or something.

Take a look at the mk5 (A5) faq pages, there's a thing about it in there

Thanks for link Seatman, I had actually found that and had a read through wasn't sure if it was relatable to mine, I suspect it may be as looks like my gearbox but being over cautious only filled back through hole, mind did have yo lift front end up further to do so.

You've got me thinking! I wonder if the oil had been changed previously and had not been refilled correctly? Would I have noticed a significant difference in fear change though if not enough oil, given it would be less than half of what it should be?

I'd have thought so but not really sure. But I'd have thought it'd be 1.7 - 1.9L of oil if it's a 5spd box. Might be worth contacting a vw dealer and asking, see if the mk5 issue applies to the caddy or not.

For the record it does apply, spike to vw today.

Well that explains it, I've come across it on a friend's mk5, that's when I checked on here and found the info. Never dealt with a caddy though.
