I have a 57K mile 2012 Passat SEL that is being bought back by VW. The car has been stored for about a month and started a week ago. Today it started the car and let it run for about 10 minutes. I then shut it down and went in for lunch. When I came back out, nothing at all happened when I pushed the start button. Everything else seemed to work except items that needed the ignition on. No dash lights, sound or anything. Also, the radio needed a code to turn on. I did the following to try to get the car to start:

    Disassembled and cleaned Start Button
Checked all fuses inside the car and under the hood.
Replaced the battery (it was bad) and even gave a 200 amp boost a try.
Put new battery in remote. Did a code reset. Doors lock/unlock fine.
Held remote up against steering column in emergency position.

Does anyone have an idea of what I can try or what’s wrong? Could the problem be a relay? If so, which one? I really don’t want to spend any money on the car but it needs to be running when turned in. I’ve already accepted the buyback offer and I’m awaiting a turn in appointment.

I was told that there is a device in the steering column that controls the dash electronics, starting etc. This is in the area where the key would go on a non-SEL. Anyone know anything about this??

    Where did you hear that?
    The dash cluster module....

    Or the steering controls module?

I was thinking this myself but I didn't mention it as i ain't heard of this failing much on Vw, vauxhall is a different story....

Unless you are on about the immobilizer ring on the ignition barrel?

Can't see it being that thou as you would get codes and a dash immobilizer light..,,

One person mentioned that the problem could be in the Body Control Module and the first step would be to check the connections to the BCM. Sounds like this is worth doing. Do you know where the BCM is located on a 2012?

Important Reminder: they don't sell the NMS Passat anywhere near Clacton. The Euro-Passat is a different car.

There is a spot on the side of the steering column where you can put the end of the key, and the car is supposed to recognize it, even if the other parts of KESSY are not working. It's an indentation maybe a quarter-inch deep and the shape of the end of the key fob.

I'd also replace the key battery (and try the other key) not because I think those are likely to help, but because batteries are cheap and easy to replace, and there is a fair chance you'll be lucky.

I tried holding the brake for 30+ seconds but the BCM would not wake up....

While it may not appear in his car spec. his original post says it's a 2012 Passat SEL.

He's talking about the buyback (his car has to move under its own power for the buyback), so he's in the U.S. If you want to be picky, we know it's a 2.0L TDI because VW isn't buying back the gassers at this time, and there were no 3.0L Passats.

If he's in the U.S., it's an NMS Passat. SEL means keyless entry.

It also follows that within a month or so, he won't even be here, because he'll no longer own a TDI.

If you have suggestions that apply to a KESSY equipped NMS Passat that doesn't seem to see the key or respond to the "start" button, I'm sure it'd be appreciated.

When you get in the car, is there anything on the display between the odometer and speedometer?

Yes it was bought on the VW by back scheme so its still a Passat not a 2012?

I realize for those who aren't in the U.S. that the settlement details aren't that interesting.

He's not buying, he's selling. VW can't sell bought-back cars until they're fixed.

He needs to get it started so he can drive it to the dealer one last time. It's a 2012 NMS Passat TDI SEL.

The big question is, do we want to help him so he thinks well of the people in this forum, or do we want to make him jump through unnecessary hoops on his way out the door?

This is something I'd try because it won't you anything, and it might help. If it doesn't, it only cost a little time.

Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, and leave it for a day.

All of the modules in the car should re-boot when you hook the battery back up.
