My tdi was idling while I went into the store. When I returned, the engine had stopped and now it will not turn over. It tries, but no crank. I removed the timing belt cover and tried turning manually with a pry bar against the cam pulley, but will not turn. It may turn 1-2 degrees in either direction, but no more. Engine has 296k miles, has had the timing belt serviced at regular intervals, and has not had any other issues. Oil change 9k miles ago and it still shows in stick.
Could this have been a timing belt slip? I plan to pull the head to see what I can find, but wanted to see if anyone could provide some insight before I tear it apart.

    Thanks..

You should check timing before you do the head job. Also you could remove oil pan to check if there is some problem on crankshaft. Try to turn the engine on crank bolt not on camshaft.
