OK I'm reaching my wits end with this car. 05 b5.5, we got this car with approx 145k. My wifes grandparents bought it new, I have all service records including oil changes every5k. They did everything the stealership recommended. We got a good deal on it but I'm starting to question if its even worth keeping around. Every time I do a repair I hope I can get a few miles out of it before anything else. The more I dig into it it seems like these passats just are not like the other tdi`s. So far I have changed-
Balance shaft delete
New r-axles
Serp-belt tensioner
Camshaft lifters etc.
Brakes tires wear items etc
I know things break on old cars but some of these repairs are quite involved (expensive) I can handle wear items obviously all cars do that but am I gettinto the bottom of Pandoras box? The plan was to have a good mpg vehicle that I can run the wheels off. I don't rag on it at all. Each time I think I've covered her for a while and she bites back.
I noticed my serp belt tensioner went bad when I just did the can. Also I believe my egr is on its way out. Thats another few hundred. I'm contemplating once I get those fixed selling her. Sorry for the rant but should I bail on this car?

Alright, its not the tensioner failing again. My alternator clutch failed. I missed it before. This time I checked it and worked as designed. Put everything back together ran the car till my noise started, pulled it back apart and clutch was seized. Seems that my clutch locks up after it gets warm, ordering one tonight!

Yup, the clutched pulley seizing up is what causes the tensioner to fail. A quite and dirty check for a seized pulley is to observe the belt while the engine is idling and if it appears to sort of dance around the alt pulley is seized. At idle, the belt should track smooth with no vibration.

do the problems end.......

you own a audi... so no... your car is missing its 4 ring circus to remind you of your bank account after ownership but its audi vs vw

the only way to make it end is keep something broken on it... the way it worked in the late 80s was broken door handle.. once you fixed that the trans would fail.. fix that.. the steering rack would fail... fix that.. door handle breaks again... the idiots who did door handle #2 then would do rack.. then tranny.. then be back to broken door handle... they tend to skip that.. never see car again... too bad this happened on so many i can say this..

With deserved respects to CCBB...it ends when you decide to stop throwing good money after bad. Sell it and go buy a Toyota.

Got the new alt pulley on. Weird that it causes what it does. Mine failed locked, you would think being locked it would run like all the other brands without the clutch. Oh well.
I still have a miss feeling only on warm startups, only after sitting for a while (like grocery store amount t of time). Next up is pull off the whole intake for a cleaning. Quick question when I cleaned and checked my egr for operation my plunger only opened about 1/16". With the key cycling. I cleaned it but it really wasn't bad.

Yep double checked, all good. I did replace one about a year ago. I don't have the latest upgrade but did have the one recall done. So I'm safe as far as tips not breaking off. I live in northern Michigan and cold starts havnt been a problem so far. Dealer wanted 550$ to do latest upgrade and wouldn't even give me a price on just the reflash after I put the new plugs in.
