Have you double checked the glow plugs? Sounds like one or more cylinders is not getting preheated correctly.
Very true. My pulley has been bad for a while but with the original alternator getting ready to turn 260k miles I wonder how much more life is in it.

I agree, I'm at 255K miles and the trans has the fluid the factory put in. Shifts fine, runs good although I will admit most miles are hwy.

Not 100% sure of the Jetta but I know that on a NB it is all but impossible to put on when the belt is installed. It must be loosely hung in place...
