Default Apparently... NOT FIXED

Well... It has been a few months of thinking things were okay with the car, but the sudden shut offs have begun again. I think it is getting worse, 3 times today it happened... always with the AC on... and always when downshifting from third gear to second...

So it was fine and now it's back?

One more idea: although it should throw a code, have them take apart the EGR and intake flap valve. It looks like a throttle. There have been a few cases where the gears that move the valve get stripped. Maybe by some chance the valve is closing, causing engine starvation. Aside from intake clogging, perhapes the EGR valve is somehow malfunctioning causing the engine mangement to get confused and cut fueling.

The car is never fine-- it just doesn't turn off all the time. It is intermittent, which makes it one hard problem to fix, apparently. To my knowledge they just checked this system in the car, and tested to make sure that the car was not getting a lack of fuel. It has had the test run a few times to make sure it gets the fuel it needs, and aces it every time. We're starting to think it is an idle problem. We can watch the normal idle speed drop more and more as the car is in hotter weather w/ the ac on...

Default end saga

So, as of last week, I no longer own the 2006 TDI with the shut off issues. I traded it in for a deal with VW to get me into a 2010 (hopefully without the same random issue). VW actually worked with us a whole lot and we got the new car for a steal. So, I now have a 2010 TDI manual, white w/ tan interior, and VW has a crazy 2006 which they're having technicians take apart to try and figure out the issue.

Good luck! If they ever figure it out, please follow up.

Look at the Jetta buying guide/checklist for some interesting things to know, like use 507 VW oil, how short trips over a long time can clog the DPF, and more.

Best of luck Care to share what they were willing to offer? Was it VW or the dealer?

Iceman, I paid under 7 grand (total, with tags and title) for the new car, got a bonus on the trade in, and worked with a VW rep and then through a wholesale dealership which has treated me very well.

I have no complaints for the people I worked with later in this car's saga, but there were plenty I would not work with again from the earlier meetings.

I was in the same dealership today and was saddened to hear that they had checked over the trade in, decided nothing was wrong, and re-sold the car already! I know there is an issue, VW knows there is an issue, and sadly another person now has an 'issue' car. tsk tsk tsk VW.
